If Asian Women Hit On White Guys the Way White Guys Hit On..

If Asian Women Hit On White Guys the Way White Guys Hit On Asian Women.

Due to how our society has sexualized Asian women in a racialized way, Asian and Pacific Islander and Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) women often have to deal with sexist and racist microaggressions that are normalized in our society as “flirting.”

That means when white guys try to flirt with APIA women, a few of the same offensive comments tend to come up. “Where are you from? What kind of weird food did your mom cook for you? I really like Asian women. My last ex was Asian.”

To highlight the absurdity of these all too common comments, check out this hilarious video of what would it look like if the roles were switched and APIA women said this stuff to white men. I would bet anything that the type of guys she is referring to in this video would say amazingly douchey offensive things to any and all women they were attempting to chat up. It's in their nature.

Funny video, in all fairness however I think you can find foreigners being fetishized wherever you go. Like Japanese men wanting to date blonde Caucasian women for example, it turns out that we humans tend to crave novelty.
The "Where are you from?" question also doesn't have to be inherently racist, it's also a simple question that most people ask each other when they're trying to get to know someone, now, if you're Asian and answer something like Chicago, and then they ask "No, where are you really from?", then you can kick him in the balls.

MilkmanDansays...

Yeah, I actually get quite a bit of novelty seeking attention here in Thailand, even as a nerdy white dude.

Where are you from?
Kansas.
Is that close to New York?
...No.

I've always been a bit leery of the term "Microaggressions" it takes a lot of stuff that I might call insensitive or tactless and tries to make it into a conspiracy or something.

Seriously?

Yes, this video nailed it... all my white male friends hit on Asians this way.
And every Asian I've met thinks it's cute to refer to us as 'round eyes'...
I'll be over here rolling my (round) eyes...

Living in Portland, OR and being from Michigan, I've been asked whether I like the East coast or the West coast better and this is by people from the states.

Well don't leave us hanging. Which is it?

I liked the snow in Michigan so it's tempting to say East coast, but now that I'm older it's lost some appeal so I'm going to have to go with West coast. Portland is much better than any city in Michigan except for Detroit which is a mess right now.

Even though I'm a white dude... living in Canada... with a... well i'm single actually, this isn't quite fitting, now that I think about it, to be honest I've never even dated an APIA... but still...

That WAS pretty awesome!

NOT "conspiracy" - the microaggression projects started nationwide by college students are attempts to draw attention to the kinds of questions and encounters they experience on a daily basis in order to make others aware of their shared humanity. So yes, they would agree that a lot of the statements they draw attention to are tactless and insensitive. That's the whole point.

Also - example of the kind of real conversations I've had before:
Guy: You're Asian?
Me: My parents are from the Philippines, but I was born in the United States and have lived here ever since.
Guy: Oh, cool, so you're Asian! I've been to Japan once!
