VideoSift v6 (VS6) Beta Front Page

It's been about 6 months since we launched our VS6 beta single-video page and we've finally now launched our new beta homepage.

As before, logged-in members have the option to disable this new beta version if desired, but we encourage everyone to at least give the new layout a few days of regular use if not to fall in love with it at least to give us some quality, informed feedback.

The new video listing is intended to be much more information dense and feel more community-oriented, and we feel it achieves those goals rather well and is a huge improvement over the VS5 homepage. We also wanted to bring back some of the essence of the much loved very-blue layout of VS4.

Let us know your thoughts below, and as always with changes in software bugs/issues are to be expected so feel free to let us know if anything seems broken.

Thanks!

Little Help Needed from Anyone with an iPhone 5

Do you have an iPhone 5 handy?

I have someone who needs tech support but they are only experiencing their problem in an iPhone 5. Every other device and browser works for her, just not iPhone 5.

I don't have an iPhone 5, so I can't test it out myself, but I'd like to prove one way or the other that the iPhone 5 is broken or that her phone is broken.

If you have an iPhone 5 and are willing to load a simple little web page to see if it works for you, can you please reply here? I'd appreciate it.

*Promotes for All (Happy Talk)

It's official; the community has spoken! The *promote and *doublepromote features are no longer reserved for Bronze Star members. Effective immediately, all non-probationary members are able to invoke promotions on other members' posts.

All members have always been able to self-promote, so nothing's changed there. Now as long as you have the requisite Power Points you can throw your big swinging promotes around.

Enjoy.

[edit]

This just in: Even if you're probationary, if your account is at least 2 years old, you too get to share in these wonderful superpowers.

Hooray!

Force Your PC to Upgrade to Windows 10 Immediately (Geek Talk)

Today Windows 10 was released and it's a free upgrade for most modern Windows machines. Microsoft is rolling out the upgrade across the planet in waves, but with the instructions below you can force your PC to upgrade without waiting. It's still at the "Preparing for installation" step on my computer now.

Instructions to Upgrade to Windows 10 Without Waiting in 4 Steps:
  1. Make sure your computer is fully updated using Windows Update - that's how the Get Windows 10 app is installed; you'll see a little white Windows icon in your system tray (by the clock)
  2. Open that Get Windows 10 app and reserve your free copy of Windows 10
  3. Open a cmd.exe window as Administrator (right-click and choose Run as Administrator)
  4. In Windows Update click "Check for updates" and before it's finished checking, quickly go back to the cmd prompt and enter: wuauclt.exe /updatenow
    Windows Update will immediately start downloading Windows 10
If that doesn't work, you can just download the Windows 10 installer.

[edit]

I was getting some error with the Windows Update method, so I opted to just download. I don't know why everyone doesn't just do that to begin with.

In any case, I'm fully upgraded to Windows 10!

So far so good. Not really exploring it because I'm busy working, but I freaking love the virtual desktop feature. Finally I don't have to fill up my task bar with all my many tabs. I now have a different desktop for each different set of apps I'm working on together. This is life-changing for me.

Should full promoting privileges be available to all non-probationary members?

Just trying to move things along since Retroboy's SiftTalk "How about a little love for long-time but low-star members?"

It came up in the thread that it is a bit absurd that long-time members in good standing who don't reach silver or bronze can accrue tons of power points but can't actually use them on anything except to promote their own videos. Since most of them who stay at that level are not interested in submitting vids but are interested in participating on the site, this poll is asking whether Sifters think it would be okay if non-probies had full promote privileges (in other words, they could promote either their own or other Sifters' videos). This would allow them to spend their power points altruistically by promoting others' vids to greatness.

I can't foresee any problems with allowing it, but if you think of an issue go ahead and bring it up in the comments.

How about a little love for long-time but low-star members?

http://videosift.com/video/Dont-Stay-In-School is one example: Please see comment #6, #7 and #8

Been a low-traffic member for six years now, longer except my first account was lost in the crash of 2008. Sure, I haven't submitted much, but even the ability for me to HELP SOMEONE ELSE'S QUALITY VIDEO is restricted. It's very frustrating.

A review and retool of the policies for this site seems to be in order. There's way too many restrictions on someone who has been a faithful, low-trouble but infrequently contributing member of this site for a very long time. And I would bet that the barriers to other, newer contributors are frankly too high.

Jennifer Briney,Congressional Dish (Politics Talk)

Jen Briney, host of Congressional Dish, reads the bills passed by the House of Representatives and tells you what's in them: No talking points, no corporate filter. I have been following Jennifer's podcast Congressional Dish for over a year now. I discovered her on the No Agenda stream. She will be on "Off the Grid" with Jesse Ventura. Below is a link her appearance.

Why doesn't the Facebook login keep you logged in?

Howdy folks,

Every time I go to videosift, I have to go through the login with facebook. It never remembers my login, is there a reason for that? I'm using chrome, if that makes a difference.

I must say, as well, I don't like the beta layout of the site - since I get to see that every time I go on here, since the opt-out is only when I'm logged in. I think that if you force the issue on that design, it will be the final deathblow to the site, since it essentially hides the community.

Privilege -aka- Why I've Never Been Afraid of Being Raped (Femme Talk)

Great! Now that you've clicked the baited title.. let's get to the controversial stuff!

Firstly, This is going to be an on-going series of essays about my frustration with American Social Issues.. all of them really

Secondly, Frustration over the constant "mild" racism on this (& every other website) that re-enforces "ACTUAL" racism is what prompted this endless shitstorm of "why the FUCK would you think THAT is a 'perfectly reasonable' or valid thing to say/support"

Forgive me in advance, my shit has already been thoroughly lost over this.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
W.I.N.B.A.B.R Entry #1
- Framing - Male Privilege -
This is my attempt to establish common ground with anyone who wants to SINCERELY AND RESPECTFULLY discuss/debate these topics.
A simple understanding of how I underpin my rants here on Videosift/the Interwebs.
For me personally:
Facts are the Foundation.
Experience is the Framing.
Rants, Diatribes, & Two Cent are the colorful - sometimes distasteful - Exterior
That being said..
I'm AWARE OF and APPRECIATE my Male Privilege.
Foundation – 1 in 10 rape victims are men. (Rathus, Nevid and Fichner-Rathus, 568)
Framing -- I personally have never felt vulnerable or unsafe while walking alone to my car, or drinking with a group of rowdy frat guys.
Exterior -- Because of that, I would never tell a woman.. "Hilliary Clinton is President now. So.. can we stop pretending like sexual assault is still a 'REAL' problem affecting all women in america today."
Or "I know a women who was rape once and SHE's successful. See, no excuses. Why don't you stop whining about sexism & rape culture already?"
Or "I'm not a fan of the 'Political-Correct Police' and how they try to make everything about Rape Culture.
We're ALL potential Rapists and we ALL have an EQUAL CHANCE of being raped.
We should focus on THAT more than anything, not imagined 'Systemic Sexism & Corruption'"
Or "I don't blame all my problems on women. So i can't be sexist."
Or "My Son-in-Law got raped once. So how could I be a rapist?!"
I've never say any crazy heinous shit like this to a woman because.. my PRIVILEGE as a male is NOT taken for granted.
I'm societally-aware enough to know.. I shouldn't mock or belittle other humans' suffering.
Especially suffering that I will most likely NEVER experience at all.
Something that I will NEVER be able to fully empathize with. Ever.. at all.
And therefore, I should remain silent on this topic for the most part. Choosing my words carefully whenever I'm sincerely attempting to add to a discussion.
I never gloat and constantly lord my male privilege over women whenever a video about "female culture" gets sifted..
.. like I'm some ignorant asshole who doesn't understand women are treated differently.
"I pee outside standing up ALL the time. Why don't women just do that? It always works for me."
I am a person who understands and doesn't actively overlook that:
1.) Women are treated differently simply because they're women.
2.) That treatment is often ignored, and a double-standard is created because of that.
3.) That treatment & double-standard ARE the sexism & misogyny women constantly, frustratedly call attention to.
This.. ladies and jellyspoons.. is my analogy for white privilege - aka - "mild" racism.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Great, now i've said all that. Hopefully shit will start clicking in your WASPy "mildly racist" heads.

*Ahem*

Whenever YOU as a WHITE male, tell ME as a NON-WHITE male..
"This is no such think as White Privilege"

It's the EXACT SAME as saying..
"This is no such think as Male Privilege, now whip out your dick and start peeing on this tree like equals"

..to any woman.

"But.. Genji.." I hear you say " Everyone knows WOMEN DON'T HAVE PENISES! You're metaphors don't make any sense!"

EXACTLY WHITE MALES. EXACTLY!!

Women Blacks fundamentally lack a feature & the perks that go with it.

A feature that almost all malesWhites take for granted.

Get it now? Understand a little better? Don't give a fuck still?

Good, I'm done for now.

~Fin!~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okay, to finish this ridiculous framing that - hopefully - at least females can relate too..
Even if a woman worked thru all that daily corruption & oppression.
Acquired a dick, along with the position of Cock-mander in Chief!
..the highest, most honorable title to bestow on a person in this country..
Asshats like @lantern53 & @bobknight33 would STILL mock, disparage & talk shit about them.
" ..This President is un-american.. She went to FOREIGN SCHOOLS where they taught her about FEMALE VALUES! .. her mother is even a well-known Vaginist!
Her church of 20 years preaches FEMALE EMPOWERMENT..
She can't be trusted and she only got elected because of the Vagina Vote!
Also, I'm not a sexist or rapist either.
I just want to help those silly dickless women fix the 'problem' in the Woman Community & Culture"
Make sure you let the absurdity of that comparison sink in.
Because that's PRECISELY how ridiculous and childish racists & their apologists sound.
Here. On Reddit. Everywhere.
I don't know about you guys, but I'm finding it easier than ever to go without a TV (no I won't beat you over the head about how awesome I am for throwing out my set). I use Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, PBS Streaming and others.
It would be nice to have a way to integrate these sites into VideoSift. I've found some of my favourite shows through the Sift, like Would I Lie to You, Downton Abbey and That Mitchell & Webb Look. I think VideoSift, as a community of smarties, does a lot better job as a discovery service than even the much-ballyhooed Netflix recommendations engine
Of course there are downsides to attempting to integrate sites like Netflix et al:
-- They generally don't allow embedding!
-- Geoblocking
-- Some cost money
The first one listed above is the biggie - but what I was imagining is a URL to the show or episode, with a screenshot , and then clicking would open it in a new window - but people could leave comments and vote etc on VideoSift. My fantasy would be having viewing parties where we could all get together and group binge on new shows ... but I'd settle for a good source of recommendations for what to watch.
Geoblocking is becoming less of a problem for us people living outside North America; this is because of easy (legal) circumvention, and sites like Netflix and Crackle that have made local versions available.
Let me know what you think about the idea - and happy to hear tweaks or other suggestions in the comments.
Completely Erase Entire Comments from People You're Ignoring
I've just made a tweak to the system to allow for individual users that I define to completely erase comments in their entirety written by people you are ignoring.
If you are a person who can't stand that the existing "ignore" feature still allows you the opportunity to see comments from people you can't stand and want this feature enabled for you, just let me know (either here or in a PM if you'd prefer) and I'll enable it for you.
Caveat emptor: Once comments are completely hidden from a user you're ignoring you'll have no way to un-ignore them (except to ask me to turn this feature off for you of course).
Happy Friday!
"Community" is Back and on Yahoo!
I don't know if all fans of Community are aware of this because I never heard a word about it, but after their final season on TV last year, I guess Yahoo! picked them up for a 13-episode season, which started airing online last month.
This was quite exciting for me to learn. I'm really enjoying their new season and I want to try getting the word out to everyone else who hasn't heard.
Tell a friend.
