Rock's Most Prolific Session Musician

SFOGuy says...

Reminds me of the documentary "Standing in the Shadows of Motown"...
The sessions musicians who never get the public glory...

Oddly, she might have been bit bitter about what came after her time in music...

Some sort of music geek sound site postings...

"I enjoy the music she made in the 60's but when she posted a comment on engineers I voiced my opinion that the mid 70's to early 80's were the pinnacle of recording because of the 24-track two inch tape and the idea of the 'concept album'. I mentioned "Aja", "Goucho", "Breakfast in America", "Back In Black", "Dark Side of the Moon", "Animals", "Rumors", etc. She said she didn't like that "music" -- too many drugs involved in the making.

Post went downhill from there.... but come on, how can any reasonable musician deny the greatness of at least some of the albums mentioned above?..."

How to Make a $10k Pair of Shoes from Scratch

SFOGuy says...

Whoa..a diagnosis, which is just a diagnosis---of bipolar---
I hope he takes it easy, keeps sleeping, stays away from drugs.

When he shows them his first effort and they get to put their first efforts next to it---that's pretty awesome.

TED Talk: Whitopia

SFOGuy says...

Chinatowns, like many ghettos, are often the result of historical patterns of housing discrimination against Chinese...As in, historical exemptions on housing deeds etc...

And now, often poverty of immigrants puts them into ghettos where they first arrive and try to assimilate...

Just sayin'

The most surreal part was the Aryan Nations segment when he was in Coeur d'Alene

It's pretty much the same all over the world. I do not believe Whitopias are a bad thing. No one ever criticizes China Towns that spring up where ever populations of Chinese choose to live. Each of my own residences are within expat communities. I guess I'm just trying to make myself feel better.

Water Wheels Can Pump Water Over A Mile Without Electricity

SFOGuy says...

Whoa. I had never thought of that.
Cumulative of all the coils.
Cool.

newtboy said:

I wondered that too, but the pressure it produced (see 1:33) seems to argue that it's the cumulative height of all the coils added together (not just a multiple of the maximum height, though, because each successive coil is shorter).
That's just my guess, though.

Water Wheels Can Pump Water Over A Mile Without Electricity

SFOGuy says...

So, the maximum hydraulic pressure head (lift) would be to the same height as the top of the wheel?
Or is there a more subtle engineering take on this?

Liquid Sand Hot Tub

SFOGuy says...

the lung death thing sounds awful.

My_design said:

But that stuff isn't aerated to the point that you can dunk someone under the sand. This stuff would be easily inhaled. I've seen aerated concrete powder kill a guy before. Coroner said his lungs were so hard you could stand on them.

Liquid Sand Hot Tub

SFOGuy says...

Silicosis.

If you are a truly neurotic parent, they specifically sell sand for playboxes (guilty) that is silica-free.

My_design said:

Wouldn't inhalation of silica be really bad for those kids?

Why Switzerland is the Safest Place if WW3 Ever Begins

SFOGuy says...

The reason Switzerland is the safest place in case of a war is not its bunkers and fall out shelters (though, referencing the book "Place de la Concorde Suisse" by McPhee, this video does do a good job explaining Swiss paranoia)

Switzerland is the best place to hide in a war because:

Everyone from oligarchal and totalitarian states hides their assets there. In Swiss banks. And no one has been stupid enough in 200 years to blow up the bank holding their assets.
