The Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim

jubuttib says...

Ultimately the main thing I didn't like in Oblivion were the dungeons and ruins (pretty much everything could be changed with mods to my liking). Many people say that they were procedurally generated and that's why they suck (like in Daggerfall), but unfortunately they were lazily hand built with just a few pieces. Having played Minecraft I know that proper procedurally built dungeons would have been better. The dungeons are my main concern for the new game. I trust that Bethesda and the modding community combined can take care of the rest.

Still, until they release a game with realistic scale and including every territory mentioned in the series (gradual upgrades, naturally) it's all just a waste of time really. The Imperial Bridge should be 14 miles long at the bare minimum, and should take an appropriate amount of time to cross. That's why quick travel and horses exist.

Sorry to say but I do detest the Cohens. Vastly overrated and seemingly incapable of developing characters or vaguely interesting scripts. Some of their direction is good so maybe they should stick to that rather than developing films.
Anyone catch the ending of Old Country or whatever it's called? Absolutely rubbish and typically contrary behaviour.
They really haven't done a decent film since Raising Arizona.
Finally why, oh, why are they remaking True Grit? Run out of ideas?
Typical internet "opinion-wielder" who can freely tell you how much he hates something but is utterly ill-equipped to explain the reasons why. It's rather humorous.

Sometimes it's ok to have an opinion without having to back it up. Things like movies really don't need much of a reason, it's just how the person feels about it. Having said that, if I'm really passionate about something, I would probably want to know a good reason why, but sometimes there isn't one

I couldn't disagree more.

The ability to explain yourself has the effect of validating an opinion, whether people agree with it or not. I'm far more interested in hearing why Deano hates the Coen Brothers than hearing how much he hates them. I may never agree but at least he'll have exhausted due diligence. Additionally, I don't see how Deano's feelings will be negatively affected. In fact, if Deano were to properly articulate himself I think he'd find his own opinion will have been fortified, not diminished.

And as a bonus, I may get a new perspective on the Coen brothers.

I'll never be uninterested in hearing someone explain why they possess "opinion x." That is, in fact, the reason why we should expect a full explanation: because we're interested. I'm interested in hearing Deano's views on Fargo. How Marge Gunderson is a poorly fleshed-out character. Or why he thinks the last scene of No Country was such a failure. I want to know why he thinks the themes of Barton Fink are so ineffective. If we let him off the hook, then nothing of substance gets shared. Just empty words, utterly bereft of substance.

So I think that attitude is quite defeatist, Alien.

As a preemptive retort, "because they suck" and the like will not at all count as a proper articulation of "why" the Coen brothers are bad storytellers. Just so you know. If you didn't go to school then at least pretend like you did.

Did I just get really elitist at the end there? Oh well. I'll survive. And so will Deano.

TDS 11/16 - Bethany McLean & Joe Nocera Extended Interview

RedSky says...

I've said it before and I'll say it again, gambling is a shitty metaphor for credit default swaps.

The only thing that credit default swaps do is create a mechanism for transferring risk. To state the obvious to obscenity, it doesn't force anyone to take that risk, certis parabis it doesn't inflate the overall amount of risk that banks or lenders take on and then resell unless there are willing 3rd parties people to take on that risk from them.

The fact is, credit default swaps were a financial innovation. Anyone who makes any form of investment from 'risk-free' government bonds to venture capital is exposed to some degree of risk, and just like how most industries producing physical goods specialise in products, it makes sense that those who are particularly good at analyzing risk would be given the opportunity to analyse good investments and take on that risk for them if they were confident that they would not fail, or vice versa.

THAT was where the problem started. Simply put, the likes of AIG did not correctly factor in the probability of house prices falling. They sucked at what they were supposed to specialise in. In the end moral hazard, ultimately the critical importance of a massive international insurer among other financial firms in keeping the world economy puttering along was what required them to be bailed out.

Ironically though it turned out that while companies like AIG were terrible at risk management - government regulation, prudential supervision and policies for dealing with delinquent banks were worse, which ultimately meant the buck was passed down to taxpayers and so on ...

Now, how you can turn those simple facts on their head and blame a financial instrument that is designed to manage risk is beyond me.

It's like blaming a seatbelt you didn't use in a car accident.

Richard Feynmann explains to ICP how magnets work.

kceaton1 says...

We've found out only a bit more about how it works (Electromagnetism) since this video. Most of the knowledge comes from our particle accelerators. (We've found particles that specifically carry the force, which combine into atoms, then elements, then molecules, and so on...)

Even if we explain how everything works (we figure out gravity's connection, what makes energy into mass) we're still left with origin answers. If you understand Quantum Mechanics w/QED (and as Feynman would say it that, "You don't!") you might allow some to see that "perhaps" we were created from nothing, it just required time.

This is something that we can "conceive" and "imagine". Understanding has definitions with clear boundaries, were as the Universe it seems may only be something that is only "conceivable" until It can define Itself.

/(Being able to "define" itself could be a term to subjectively describe Humanity.)(Or Aliens...)

-- (edited in) --
The only thing the "ICP" added to that speech is that they're correct, but only if the question was asked by a serious mind. Otherwise, they show their complete and utter lack of any knowledge we've had available--to them--since before they were born. It's a parody (almost dark irony; new *tag?) only in the sense of how ridiculously rampant this type of thinking is; in the common populace. It's more ironically sad (as above), in a lot of ways. Their video shows (atleast in their city school zone) how ineffective our teaching methodology/funding is. (Not the teachers; more society and the structure of learning. Teachers tend to be the only glue holding anything together. I've had more than enough first hand knowledge and/or witnessing.)

I could add on forever. The Teachers are willing to change and many bend over backwards; paying for NEW texts (sometimes buying new texts so they don't use some text that has been broken by another state), materials (chemistry, biology, music, etc... pay the most -- unless you're an elementary teacher...then you pay 1/10 your paycheck, if you care for your kids). IT'S not the teachers and the children will go with the flow. There needs to be an ideological change in how kids are taught. I'd go with a college type. Small classes, higher budgets, good training for teachers. Consequences that will make a bully STOP, and if they don't make sure there are classes to help them and if necessary the parents as well. (Yes, parents should be able to be pulled from work.) On staff Doctors/Psych to always help (I know some are starting this). Apprenticing. Not holding a kid back in all areas cause they suck at one. I could go on for awhile longer. Some of this might require us to demobilize the military/industrial complex. Look at how well they can teach "children/teenagers with no hope" into a Tier One Operator, SOC etc...

/Didn't mean to be so long, but as you can see, the "ICP" really bug me.

You do know you don't have to say "I hate you" to hate someone right? Also check out a movie called "Speak" it's my favorite movie with Kristen in it, you'll like it because she takes a vow of silence in it and doesn't talk most of the movie

I rather be a bit annoyed and a bit late than dead.

I agree with the overall thrust of your comment (racial profiling is not just immoral, but it also presents a weakness to be exploited), but I should mention that I don't think current airline security policy is really saving lives, nor do I think its only cost is inconvenience.
We're skirting along the lines of surrendering our 4th amendment rights with what we're doing now. Just imagine if there's some big attack on malls, and the reaction is to have the TSA do security for every shopping mall in the country.
I feel like the right answer is for us to deal with terrorism like any other murder -- don't start infringing the freedom of everyone in the name of security, just go after the people who pose the threat, and let people live their lives without having intrusive security measures inflicted on them.

Point taken. You are correct and I agree with you to some extent, the not saving lives bit, as it is impossible to stop a truly dedicated attack on anything really. I haven't flown in the US, only in Europe, so I don't know how bad/intrusive the checks are over there therefore I can't agree or disagree about that point, I have no data to support either view. However over here it has mostly been a bit of an inconvenience: take of your shoes, in England, and not being allowed to bring any fluids aboard, everywhere I have been (like I am going to hijack a plane with a bottle of coke, I mean seriously WTF!, My house keys are a better weapon than that and they suck as a weapon.)

Ricky Gervais on celebrities and their problems

rosekat says...

>> ^Samaelsmith:
^ Agreed. Where does he get the idea that working class people don't suffer from depression?

The point he's making is that celebrities are pandered to, and succumbing to their 'depression' is like a luxury that most working-class aren't and can't be afforded. 'Cause they have to get their kids off to school, so they suck it up. Also, he may be inferring that the term 'depressed' is used too lightly and inaccurately as a blanket of irresponsibility. Everyone feels like crap sometimes, for an hour, a day, sometimes a few weeks - doesn't mean you're clinically depressed, that requires professional assessment. And yes I understand that loads of people are going through their lives with undiagnosed depression, and that is a damn shame.

Edit: Guess I was beaten to the explanation by dannym! Next time a type before I grab a snack!

The Top 100 Cheesiest Movie Quotes

AeroMechanical says...

I may have just missed it, but "They sucked his brains out." from Starship Troopers should surely be in there.

I will admit that the bubblegum quote should qualify as cheesy. Somehow though, Rowdy Roddy Piper just seems to makes it work. If, for instance, Arnold Schwarzenegger (hey... that's in my spellcheck!) had said it, I probably wouldn't stop laughing for a week, but in a mean way.
