Tough Guise: the crisis in masculinity

GeeSussFreeK says...

Psh, this is pretty jaded to a dying idea...that we are a blank slate created in whole by our experience. This quaint idea has been dying more and more each day. In truth, nature and nurture are locked together in a great struggle for the dominance in the fore of our mind. Just changing social norms and such doesn't change the underlying aggression seeded in us. Just look around you to non-humans for this. The male is almost always the main aggressor for mating, territory. This video also raises a false dichotomy between violence and emotional sensitivity. It is possible to be a violent person and emotionally complex and/or fragile.

Where as I do agree that violent urges are a detriment to us all, I question his evaluation of it being so superficially based, the counter to that is just to overwhelming to even go into.

Generation M: Misogyny in Media & Culture

Male feminism?

It may not be obvious but these girls like it the way they are. Just look around you. Most girls look normal and natural, but those that imitate some Hollywood slut want to be just that. "She likes the attention."
Why is this guy fighting for something that that category of women don't want?
It's the same with boys. Not all are tough muscular douchebags. Only those that choose it. I believe it's called freedom.

PS: Where I come from, people still realize that there is more to life than wallpapering your face to look pretty.

I know you asked that of someone else but I want to offer two things real quick, cindercone, then I'll leave you to them since I don't want to jump in the middle.

First of all this is why you should care if you're a Christian. This is the damage being done, this is the source of too many crisis of faith, this is your enemy. Not atheists. The roots of a crisis of faith.

And this is an argument that one atheist made when defending a theist he tends to hate but who had just been suspended from Youtube for hate speech against Islam. This comes closer to why I care.

The problem in part is that we've got a movement based on lies, on distortions of both reality and of the truth, and that movement has been doing all too well and has more power than it should have ever got. Look around you. How much of that actually functions without a base of educated scientists to keep it working and to develop new technology? Where does the next generation of them come from when we intentionally distort and deny reality and what science says? Other nations have pitched themselves into a dark age of sort and we can too, even if we don't realize it.

Why Sam cares he'd have to explain but there's plenty of reason for all of us to care. It's not an us and them situation. It's a we situation. Everyone but the liars themselves. They are hurting all of us even if we sometimes don't realize it yet.

Barry McGuire "Eve of Destruction"

calvados says...

http://lyricwiki.org/Barry_McGuire:Eve_Of_Destruction

The eastern world it is exploding
Violence flarin, bullets loadin
You're old enough to kill but not for votin
You don't believe in war but whats that gun you're toting
And even the Jordan River has bodies floatin

But you tell me
Over and over and over again my friend
Ah you don't believe
We're on the eve of destruction

Don't you understand what I'm tryin' to say
Can't you feel the fears I'm feelin' today
If the button is pushed there's no runnin' away
There'll be no one to save with the world in a grave
Take a look around you boy
It's bound to scare you boy

And you tell me
Over and over and over again my friend
Ah you don't believe
We're on the eve of destruction.

Yeah my blood's so mad feels like coagulating
I'm sitting here just contemplating
I can't twist the truth it knows no regulation
Handful of senators don't pass legislation
And marches alone can't bring integration
When human respect is disintegrating
This whole crazy world is just too frustrating

And you tell me
Over and over and over again my friend
Ah you don't believe
We're on the eve of destruction.

Think of all the hate there is in Red China
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama
You may leave here for four days in space
But when you return it's the same old place
The pounding of the drum the pride and disgrace
You can bury your dead but don't leave a trace
Hate your next-door neighbor but don't forget to say grace

And tell me over and over and over and over again my friend
You don't believe
We're on the eve of destruction
Mm, no, no, you don't believe
We're on the eve of destruction

I was, but then I'm what some people would call a "web stalker".

I'm not trying to "self-destruct." I haven't discarded anyone's videos or made whiney SiftTalks.

I wasn't even trying to make thepinky shit a matter of public discourse. That was burdturgler. As for the argument of profile's being public, how many were aware of the spat until burdturgler aired it, honestly.

We can all wish for peace, but that is an alien and impossible concept. If you don't think that's true, look around you.

I don't pander to anyone's idea of the image I should portray. I just am.

I haven't been around during the time you've been here. I wasn't here when the drama between you and pinky started. I'm way behind and out of touch, and honestly, not all that interested in catching up--I can't follow feuds without getting bored (honestly, even when I am one of the participants I have trouble keeping interest long enough to track).

...but... I just spent some time reading your blog, and I like your style. I might not approve of some of your forms of communication, but you are smart, and interesting, and I hope you stick around and don't self-destruct.

No reason you should care what I think: you probably know even less of me than I know of you.

But it's just a fact: I look forward to reading your words again, though I would certainly prefer that the point-to-point between you and pinky morphed into a dissipating mucous-scented fog.

"Why Aikido Looks Fake" - Explanation of Ukemi (Falling)

NordlichReiter says...

None of us can prove that we know what will happen in a "real life event".

We cannot know, and will never know, because fights in a bar or things like this are not spontaneous therefore some one has an advantage right from the get go.

Learning to kill with strikes is easy, learning to break arms, is easy, learning to choke and break a neck is easy.

These techniques are easy, you study a martial art to learn something that is not easy.

I do not practice Ki or Chi, if an unwilling opponent appears I will just use the techniques to cause massive damage.

Sankyo, Shihonage, irimi nage(to break the neck), kubishime, yonkyo, and rokyo(Looks like an arm bar), kotegaeshi.

Do not think that in a real fight there is only one opponent, because there are always multiple opponents, they just haven't joined the fray.

We all like to use that real world saying... Know what happens to some one when they are on the ground, or grappling? They get stomped on, or stabbed by some one they didn't see because they were to busy with another opponent. Know what happens to some one who tries to use a chi ball, or a form? They get they're asses handed to them.

The best way to decimate an opponent? Look for the nearest weapon, take the time to look around you at your computer. See how many things are there that can be used as weapons.

To a master every thing and anything is a weapon. Remember when Jason Bourne used the rolled up paper, pen, and power cord as weapons?

There is a saying in the firearm defense world "A handgun is so you can fight your way to a long gun."
Fists are so you can fight your way to a weapon.

You're just atheists because y'all want to sin

JohnnyMackers says...

I'm agnostic leaning towards atheism because I still think religion is by far the more presumptuous way of answering these questions. It makes all these claims and is backed up by...nothing.

Science? Well look around you. Your computer and all those other fun electronics you own? Invented by practical application of scientific principles. And they work!

And Mink, I didn't mean you personally. It's just frustrating and something I see all too often.

this is what i don't understand about people who still support the war.

i can almost forgive people for being pro war before the war, but after absolutely everything has turned out to be false.... wtf?

are you just too embarassed to admit you were wrong and misled?

look around you. jesus. what shred of credibility are you claiming now when you gleefully shout "the surge is working!" years after you said "mission accomplished"?

don't worry, it's not your fault, you were lied to. Now impeach the fucker who represents these lies and next time check your facts before voting. problem solved. no need to spend hours on the internet making excuses for a cunt who stole your money and kills civilians with it.
