Making A Magnetohydrodynamic Thruster

newtboy jokingly says...

I’m pretty sure that’s why they called it a “caterpillar drive” in Red October.

Soviet Nuclear Submarine Defects to the United States, 1984

This would make a good movie.. You could name it something like Red October and get a Scottish guy to play the Russian captain so everyone would be able to empathize with how noble he is.

Keanu Reeves Tactical 3 gun shooting

radx says...

At the risk of sounding like an ass: every 3-gun match I've seen looked extremely narrowed down in terms of the required skill set. The shooters are ridiculously fast and accurate, but at the end of the day, it's tagging paper and steel with an AR-15 at 20m or less. Lots of skill required to be good at it, but oh so very narrow. Like high-power, if you will.

2-gun, run & gun, even cowboy action seem to require a more diverse skill set. Events like Red October, even though it had a lot of paper at point blank this year.

John Williams' greatest themes

direpickle says...

As much as I love Williams, I'm going to have to say that he does have a little competition in Basil Poledouris as well.

Both Conans, Red Dawn, The Hunt for Red October, Robocop, Starship Troopers, and on and on.

Still, Williams probably wins.

Hunt for Red October: Torpedo attack scene

srd says...

I was actually looking for the scene where the caterpillar drive is engaged for the first time and the crew starts singing the hymn to red october. Didn't find it. But this scene is just as nice.

Can you imagine what would it would look like if remade today? Probably way to much CGI showy-offy effects drowning out the intensity of the moment.

Armageddon sells: Tom Clancy's "Endwar" game trailer

Raigen says...

Clancy's video games are much better than his books and film adaptations.

Funny you should mention that, I just watched The Hunt For Red October last night, for probably the hundred-gajillionth time, and I still maintain how much of an excellent movie it is. Great acting, intriguing story, just one heck of an entertaining watch.

And as for his books, I'll agree that some of them aren't that great, however, one of my favourite fiction novels is the original Rainbow Six by Tom Clancy. It has a deep, engaging story line, it's very descriptive, interesting action, and some rather nice character development.

But, to each, their own, as they say.

Oklahoma State Rep. Goes On Anti-Gay Tirade

JAPR says...

^ ^For example, we know that EVERYONE is attracted to Sean Connery. Male, female, whatever, you know that you get all hot and bothered when you watch him in Goldfinger and The Hunt for Red October.

Also, since homosexuality has been found in nature, which is supposedly God's grand design, it must be natural for homosexuality to occur. Is it the most common thing? No, but then again, neither are a lot of perfectly "acceptable" traits. People end up gay without being raised by homosexuals, and this has happened all throughout history, so it's just stupid to say that homosexuals would ever cease to exist.
